Touchscreen phones – what you need to know

Mobile phone technology is becoming more and more powerful with many mobile phones acting like mini-computers. The ability to make phone calls and send texts is no longer the minimum we require of our phones – sending and receiving emails, a good inbuilt camera, an ability to surf the internet – all of these things must come as standard. Increasingly, a touch screen is the new â€˜must-haveâ€™ standard feature of a good mobile phone.

But, as with all new technologies, there are a few things you should consider before making the conversion and ditching the keypad. Here are a few things to look out for:

- Is it a smartphone? You should be aware that with phone manufacturers catching on to the touchscreen trend, these phones are becoming more common across all sectors of the market. So just because it has a touchscreen, that doesnâ€™t necessarily mean it will have the million and one other features that youâ€™d expect. Thereâ€™s no industry definition of a â€™smartphoneâ€™ but most sources agree that a smartphone is one that offers advanced features similar to a PC. Internet capability, a cameraphone, email, etc – these are what turn a touchscreen phone into a smartphone. The HTC Desire (available from Vodafone) is one such example â€“ it offers HD photos and video, a big touchscreen display and superfast internet with access to an app store.

- Sensitivity. This is an important consideration for most of us, because the whole process of using your phone will be horribly frustrating if sensitivity is not calibrated correctly. Ideally youâ€™ll be able to try out the phone before you buy but factory presets may be different to those on the handset you tried out. Ask the sales people whether itâ€™s possible to calibrate the phoneâ€™s sensitivity yourself using the settings menu – for some phones you may have to find and download files online to override settings, a rather more complicated process.

- Stylus. Again, this is a handy addition to any touchscreen phone as often you can be more precise with a stylus than you can with a finger. Itâ€™s always handy to have a backup.

- Button size. This is a similar issue to sensitivity as if the touchscreen buttons are small and you have rather large fingers, you may find yourself always pressing two buttons at a time. Unlike sensitivity, itâ€™s a problem that may not be as easily remedied (though itâ€™s always worth checking).

HTC Roadmap Leak Update

Iâ€™m sure we have all heard and seen the leaked roadmap for HTC 2010, in fact the same thing happened to the manufacturer in 2009 and to fair they continued forward with their launch plan and it didnâ€™t cause too much concern as devices like the Hero was welcomed with open arms.

The team over at Mobile Choice magazine have kindly picked out 3 devices to look out for:

HTC Bravo

Running a 1Ghz Qualcomm processor on Android 2.1 plus expect to see a 3.7 inch AMOLED touch-screen,5 megapixel camera with dual LED flash, a welcomed 3.5mm audio jack, A-GPS, 512MB RAM, 320MB of storage and naturally it has expansion using a MicroSD card. Connectivity wise it has the now standard WiFi and HSPA for internet and email.

According to the roadmap expect this one to drop sometime around April 2010.

HTC Legend

According to Mobile Choice this could be the one that tops the Hero â€“ and what a mighty task it has because we really like the Hero! The Legend is super slim at only 11.4mm and is a tablet with a touch display and by the sounds of it, it has the Heroâ€™s â€˜chinâ€™. They have upgraded the trackball and opted for the new standard which is a touchpad, 5 megapixel camera with auto focus and a 3.2 inch AMOLED display.

Ummmmm, nice â€“ but as usual we want more info!

HTC Buzz

This little device will be aimed at the youth market as the device has exchangeable back covers with funky designs. It will have a flat touch screen design with a 5 megapixel camera with auto focus and a flash so its likely to be running on Android 2.1 and connectivity wise it will run on the super fast HSDPA.

No details about the launch date for this device but watch this space!

HTC Smart

HTC Smart running Brew

Just when we thought we had seen enough new handsets from the HTC camp they announce that another new handset will be launched called the HTC Smart which will use Qualcommâ€™s Brew mobile platform rather than Android.

The Brew platform has been previously used by the devices like the INQ and the 3 Skypephone however not many devices launched in the UK have used the platform. Nevertheless the platform is a much cheaper alternative to other smartphone platforms so perhaps the HTC Smart will be a extremely affordable smartphone.

When using the Smart you will come across features such as the brilliant HTC Sense Me which has been featured on the HTC HD2 and the Hero devices. The Smart should be available come Spring 2010.

Google to launch branded smart phone

Google to launch branded device?

Apparently Google is poised to launch its own branded mobile smart phone device using the Android platform providing free calls. HTC have been earmarked as the manufacutrer to build the device, which would make sense consdering HTC’s already successful portfolio of sub branded devices offered to the UK mobile networks.

The rumour is that this device will be more powerful than the iPhone 3GS, in fact twice as powerful, plus with Google offering free calls via their Google Voice service this will certiainly cause some concern for the UK mobile network operators who are already working off small margins for both voice and text. However Google will need to work with a network to ensure that the 3G and WiFi services are made available wherever the user is.

We are not too sure how this would work, as we are confident that Google could get the distribution right however they need a network partner otherwise the only other option is for consumers to purchase the device outright with a cost estimated to be around Â£500 this is a mean ask. Then you must think about Google’s existing relationships with the other manufacutrers who are already using the platform – would they like it? Coudl this be another chance for Symbian to come back with a stronger offering? Only time will tell and naturally we’ll keep you informed.
