Mobile phones are integral to a huge pallet of people from different social backgrounds and with different daily needs. Recent studies have shown that in these times of economic crises we`re more likely to sacrifice spending in other areas before we cut back our mobile budgets, leaving food as the only commodity we consider more important for our pennies. This is perhaps why the UK has more active mobile phones than it has citizens and why the mobile phone market is always evolving to slake our thirst for the latest and greatest in pocket sized technology. Let`s look at the main essential functions that mobiles must exhibit to be competitive today and what people use their mobiles for.

Calls, Texts and MMS

Of course most people want their phone to perform the first two functions and perform them well. With ever increasing battery life and falling call costs it`s getting easier and cheaper to make as many calls and send as many text messages from your mobile as you can. Picture messaging (MMS) is also growing as more people want to share their snaps with friends and family and as a result the costs are also falling in this area. Most modern phones will allow all three of the above functions, but bear in mind that only the latest version of Apple`s hugely popular iPhone is capable of picture messaging, so it`s not universal.

Mobile Internet

Since the dawn of 3G networks, people have been given faster, cheaper access to the internet on their mobiles. Costs vary and for some people getting online whilst mobile can prove very expensive, but for frequent surfers there are plenty of tariffs designed to keep costs down. The speed of your mobile internet is dependent on the power of your phone, the capabilities of your provider`s 3G networks and whether you`ve got enough 3G reception where you`re trying to access the internet. As a result it`s essential that you check up on the details before you commit to a contract, especially since loads of mobile content, applications, music and movies are now available for you to download whilst you`re out and about.

Connectivity

Modern mobile phone handsets will need a few basic aspects of connectivity to make sure they conform to current standards. First off you`ll need to look out for Bluetooth connectivity, which is essential for connecting wireless peripherals to your phone, or for transferring data between your phone and anther Bluetooth device. This is mostly employed by people to connect hands free headsets or ear pieces for making and receiving calls whilst they`re driving or busy. Another modern extra that many will desire is Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing you to connect to the internet via a Wireless network rather than spending money and using 3G. Some mobile phones also have GPS sat nav built in and though this is far from essential it will enable you to access detailed information on your location and surrounding attractions and amenities when travelling.
